The Nigerian Super Eagles Midfielder and Captain, John Mikel OBI, have made it known to the public at the end of African Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2019 in Egypt, where the Super Eagles of Nigeria came third, that he his quitting International Football.
The Nigerian veteran Footballer, who is also a former Chelsea Midfielder who just signed a new deal, where he will be moving to Trabzanspor in Turkey for the new 2019/2020 season wrote;
I started my National journey here in Egypt and finished in Egypt. It all started in 2006, when I was opportuned to play my first official game for Nigeria, and this year AFCON will mark the last match I will play for Nigeria’s National team.
I really appreciate the country and the Super Eagles for the opportunity given to me to showcase my skills and talents here in Egypt in 2003 under 17 World Cup which make the begin of my national career, which brings about a robust career both Nationally and Internationally.
I think this is the right time for me at this time when am 32 years of age to retire from our prestigious National Team, Super Eagles to give chance to younger generation and to take the Nigeria National Team to the Next level.
I want to say a very big Thank you to my supporters and to the country at large for your prayers, support, encouragement and love towards me for over 15years of my career.
Nigerian’s are also happy with Mikel OBI especially with the bronze medal he won for the country in AFCON 2019
